Friends… I’m sure that you must also have been disturbed by the recent
news of significant happenings within Amnesty International;
specifically, the suspension of senior staff member Gita Sahgal.
In my understanding at least, it seems very difficult to believe that
something as significant as this could have happened without some
fairly long and deep background (in other words, this is not just
about one single disagreement); but we don’t know that deeper
background as yet.
In the meanwhile however, it is extremely important to pay attention
to the damage that this suspension has done, not just to Amnesty but
also to the credibility of much wider movement – and movement of
movements - of which Amnesty is but one part (but in particular,
precisely because it is such a significant and well-known part).
This mail announces the posting of a ‘Global Petition to Amnesty
International : Restoring the Integrity of Human Rights’, at http://www.human-rights-for-all.org/spip.php?article15
. Please take a look at it and consider signing it.
Thanks to those who have taken the initiative of preparing and posting
this petition – Amrita, others...
